It was the “Charlotte Games” in Birmingham this week, as the seven-year-old princess took a starring role in the Commonwealth sporting action.
Charlotte attended her first event solo with her parents, Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and by George, she gave her big brother a run for his money – and her little one, to be fair – in the publicity stakes.
The adorable mini-Windsor went through all the emotions as she cheered, beamed and winced at the swimming, hockey and gymnastics. She even gave Dad a thumbs up at one point. But like little Louis and George before her, she started to flag with the heat and length of time, looking visibly fed up and rubbing her eyes with fatigue.
Tim Lawler, chief executive of SportsAid, told the Independent Charlotte said, “It’s gymnastics that I like,” adding her parents revealed she’s trying lots of sports at home. She’s said to be good at football and clearly likes horse-riding. She reportedly received a pony for her birthday in May and had a party at Anmer Hall. She has been taking riding lessons, so she can follow in a family tradition – like her great-granny and perhaps even her Olympian relatives Zara Tindall and Princess Anne.
Charlotte looked lovely in a smart Rachel Riley Breton dress, £39, which, of course, promptly sold out.
The Queen’s close encounter
There was some shocking news this week, as a 20-year-old man was charged with offenses under the Treason Act, after being arrested with a crossbow at Windsor Castle on Christmas Day. Jaswant Singh Chail was charged with intending to injure the Queen as she celebrated Christmas.
Royal followers will remember the Queen survived a previous shooting attempt during the 1981 Trooping the Colour as she rode side-saddle at the head of her birthday parade, when a gunman fired six blanks at her.
The Queen, 96, meanwhile, is enjoying her summer break in Balmoral, where she’s likely cooling off as Scotland is managing to escape the heatwave hitting the rest of the country.
Happy birthday Beatrice
With the birth of her first child, Sienna, last September, it’s fair to say Mrs Mapelli Mozzi has had a life-changing year. So, as she celebrates her 34th on Monday, if Princess Beatrice doesn’t hit the nightclubs like the good old days, we’re not judging.
Fun fact 1: she was the first member of the Royal Family to complete the London Marathon in April 2010. Fun fact 2: Beatrice scooped up where China’s luckiest number is concerned – she was born at 8:18 pm on August 8, 1988, at London’s Portland Hospital.
Kate’s crowned a style queen
Congratulations to the Duchess of Cambridge aka Tatler’s style star of 2022. The society magazine released its 25 Best Dressed List this week and Catherine topped the fashion chart as ‘sovereign superstar’. The other 24 women and men are unveiled in the September issue, with Princess Beatrice making the 11th style spot.
Catherine stepped out in two very different looks this week. On Sunday, at the Sail Grand Prix in Plymouth, she wore Holland Cooper shorts with a navy and white striped sweater for a classic nautical vibe. And at the Commonwealth Games this Tuesday, she went for fashion gold in her white Alexander McQueen suit. Scroll back up to first report to remind yourself how cool she looks.
