The 10 most-eggcellent royal events of 2021 (so far...)
For an Easter treat, we review the Royal Family's sweetest moments of the year
1. The Queen emerges again
What a joy to see the Queen emerge from lockdown this week, to mark the centenary of the Royal Australian Air Force at a service at Runnymede. She commemorated some of 11,100 RAAF personnel who lost their lives in service of their country. Making the most of the spring weather, HRH, who turns 95 this month, looked as blooming marvellous as her floral hat.
2. Mike Tindall makes a cracking baby announcement
It is the all-time best baby announcement ever - Mike Tindall revealed on his podcast The Good, The Bad & The Rugby, that Zara had delivered their third child and first son Lucas Philip, on the bathroom floor of their Gatcombe Park home on March 21. They didn’t have time to get to the hospital, so it “was running to the gym, get a mat, get into the bathroom, get the mat on the floor, towels down, brace, brace, brace.”
3. Philip comes out of hospital
After 28 days in hospital, on March 16 we finally got the good news that Prince Philip, 99, had been discharged and returned to Windsor Castle. A statement from Buckingham Palace said, “His Royal Highness wishes to thank all the medical staff who looked after him... and everyone who has sent their good wishes.”
4. Eugenie posts sweet baby pictures
How adorable are Eugenie’s Instagram snaps? The princess is clearly enjoying her new role as a mum, posting loved-up baby pics like this one on March 24 and her low-key baby reveal snap on February 20, which was taken by their visiting midwife.
5. Harry and Meghan announce happy baby news
There was happy news from California in February, when Harry and Meghan announced they were expecting their second child. To mark the occasion, they posed for a beautiful photo remote-shot by Misan Harriman. It comes on the back of the sad news Meghan previously suffered a miscarriage.
6. George and Charlotte write to ‘Granny Diana’
When the Cambridges shared the adorable cards their children made for Granny Diana on Instagram, who didn’t have a lump in their throat? “Each year on Mother’s Day, George, Charlotte and Louis make cards remembering their Granny, Diana, for William,” they wrote. Whatever your circumstances, we are thinking of you this Mother’s Day.” As for Charlotte writing, “Papa is missing you” - that got us right here.
7. Charles confesses he’s nuts for red squirrels
On January 21, Charles marked Red Squirrel Appreciation Day saying, “I take enormous pleasure in having them around – and in – the house when I’m at home in Scotland… they’ve even been known to hunt down a few of their favourite nuts left out in an unguarded jacket pocket.” William also confirmed his dad - Patron of the Red Squirrel Survival Trust - is crazy for his nut-nibbling pals. “He is completely infatuated with them – to the extent that he’s given them names.”
8. William and Catherine walk down the aisle at Westminster Abbey (again)
It’s almost ten years since we put up the bunting, bought the biscuit tins and were glued to our tellies watching William and Catherine tie the knot. Fast forward to March 23 when the couple visited the Abbey’s vaccination centre. Never knowingly underselling any fashion moment, Catherine sported a very bridal-esque white lace Catherine Walker coat dress and even wore her hair half up, half down - just like when she wed at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011.
9. Charles and Camilla pose for blooming lovely snap
These nature lovers wished us all “a happy and healthy first day of Spring” on March 20, marking the Spring Equinox with this sweet pic taken in Highgrove Gardens. Since the pandemic hit, Charles and Camilla are embracing social media with gusto: from book clubs to A-list Christmas performances and half-term nature challenges, they’re the King and Queen of the ’gram.
10. Harry’s hilarious afternoon tea with James Corden
Feels like a lifetime ago, but it was only February when Harry’s fun and candid chat on an open-top bus in LA broke the internet. He spilt his tea, rapped the Fresh Prince of Bel Air and smashed an obstacle course. Apart from realising Netflix missed a trick not commissioning P.E. with Prince Harry, we also learnt he’d love Damian Lewis to play him in The Crown, Meghan calls him ‘Haz’ and their Christmas pressie from The Queen was a waffle maker.
Meet Megghan & Harry with Oeufrah (plus Archie’s chicks)
A love of all things royal tends to run in the family here at The Royal List, and we think Maria’s youngest daughter, Sylvie, totally cracked it with her school’s Easter egg competition entry. Eggstra-ordinary attention to detail. Long live the Moneggy!
