Why we love Prince Louis
He’s the Windsor one to watch – how little Louis ruled the Jubilee and melted every mother’s heart
The stand-out from last weekend’s Platinum Jubilee for us, was Prince Louis. The four-year-old well and truly burst onto the scene with his adorable antics.
First we saw little Louis, who turned four on April 23, show all his emotions at once during the (admittedly, very long) Trooping the Colour on Thursday, June 2. When the jets flew overheard, he clamped his hands on his ears and screamed, which even raised a wry smile from the Queen.
But it was his dramatics at the (again, very lengthy) Platinum Pageant on Sunday that did it for us. It’s a hard ask to expect a pre-schooler to sit quietly through a long event like that and Louis certainly didn’t.
He fidgeted, threw his cushion around, blew raspberries at his mum, Catherine, scrabbled over sweets and ended up on his grandpop’s knee, with Prince Charles attempting to keep him entertained.
Catherine’s face was priceless – she was clearly trying to keep him on his best behaviour, whilst aware all the cameras were trained on them.
Mike Tindall, who was seated behind Louis, revealed on his podcast that the royal kids were on a sugar high. He said, “Louis, he was just wanting to have fun, and my two (daughters) are always mischievous, so it was trying to keep a lid on. There was a lot of sweets out back though, so they had complete sugar highs. It’s tough for them. They’re all young, so asking them to sit, because it was two ’til five or whatever, it’s a long time. As any parent knows you just do whatever needs to be done.”
According to The Telegraph, Louis is demonstrating typical cheeky traits of a third-born child, and seeing as Kerry is also a third-born, she’s not saying anything…
And while every mother in the world couldn’t help but laugh at the sight of Louis’ tantrums (Kerry once had to carry one of her misbehaving daughters down the road like a baguette under her arm), incredibly, the Duchess of Cambridge came under criticism by some keyboard warriors for not controlling her son. Really? Have they ever met a four-year-old? Royal or not?
For what it’s worth, we loved it and thank Louis for keeping it regally real. Even William and Catherine joked on Twitter, “We all had an incredible time, especially Louis.” One thing’s for sure, we’re going to be seeing a lot of this little character.
Strictly shimmies to Buckingham Palace
We all know Camilla is a Strictly superfan (and Charles too), so reports that the royal couple are in talks to host a live show of Strictly Come Dancing from Buckingham Palace’s historic ballroom has made our week completely ‘fab-u-lous’.
According to The Sun, the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall made the offer to the BBC, and their wish has been approved by the Queen (who, so says Camilla, watches the show too). The episode slated for the royal hosts could be either the semi or quarter finals later this year, with Charles and Camilla even showing off their twinkle toes on the dancefloor. What about a Charleston, Charles?
Buckingham Palace is no stranger to the Glitterball trophy, hosting the 2017 Strictly Christmas Special, which saw Camilla dancing with judge Craig Revel Horwood and dancer, Brendan Cole. She also made a surprise appearance on the 2020 final, thanking everyone for keeping the nation lifted during the pandemic.
William sells the Big Issue
Prince William took to the streets this week, to sell the Big Issue. According to The Telegraph, the prince, who has worked with the homeless ever since his mother Diana took him to shelters as a child, stood incognito in Westminster.
Many people who walked past didn’t notice it was the heir to the throne, dressed in red, but eventually he was recognised. A caretaker of the building on the other side of the road told the newspaper it was “very strange” there was no noticeable security presence. “I was on the other side of the road to him, and I waved over at him,” he said. “And bear in mind one day he’ll be King, he didn’t wait for us to step across to him - he crossed the road to us, like he’d seen a friend.”
Camilla rocks in Charles’ robe
When you’ve shopped your own wardrobe, why not start on your husband’s – that’s what Camilla did last weekend at the Platinum Party at the Palace. She looked very regal in an embroidered gown and fashion-spotters soon worked out it was a dark blue Saudi Daqlah, which had been previously gifted to Charles on a visit to Saudi Arabia, by local designer Yahya Al Bishri.
Camilla had it altered and has worn it on previous occasions, in 2008 and 2010. And while it’s designed for men, we reckon she rocked it. “It is just a great feeling to see the whole world is talking about my outfit,” the designer told Arab News.
Lilibet meets Lilbet
Prince Louis was not the only royal kid in town who had a big weekend. Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor flew over (with Mum, Dad and Archie) for the Platinum Jubilee and, after her first (private) meeting with her namesake great-granny, also celebrated her first birthday on Saturday.
On Monday, Harry and Meghan shared this adorable pic of Lilibet, taken by Misan Harriman in the grounds of Frogmore Cottage, their Windsor home. Dressed in a pale blue dress by Isabel Garreton (an ethical brand which ceased trading this month), the birthday girl enjoyed a ‘casual, intimate backyard picnic’ at Frogmore and tucked into this glorious cake by Clare Ptak, who made the royal couple’s wedding cake in 2018.
“It was an absolute pleasure to make this special cake last week for Lilibet’s birthday. Wishing her a very happy year ahead,” the baker announced on Instagram, before adding: “The inside was the Amalfi lemon and elderflower cake I created for the Duke and Duchess’s wedding in 2018, but this time we covered it with a strawberry buttercream specially for Lilibet.”
Hats off to Mike
He may not have an official royal title, but it’s self-evident that Mike Tindall is the Royal Family’s go-to ‘Funcle’.
With Zara by his side, the couple were clearly having the best time at every event they attended over the jubilee weekend and we loved Mike’s batty hatty moments posted on Instagram. We reckon Zara’s Juliette Botterill fascinators suit him. The blue one’s a keeper, Mike.
It’ll be party hats at the Tindalls this Saturday as their second daughter, Lena, turns four. Happy birthday Lena!
