Will Harry and Meghan head to the White House?
Harry's friendship with the Bidens, along with Meghan's lifelong activism mean they’re set to become a Washington power pair
As President Biden settles in to the White House, we predict some of the first people who will be Zooming into the Oval Office will be Harry and Meghan. Their Archewell Foundation will perfectly align with the new president’s plans – and Harry already has an in, after all, as he is a close friend of the Bidens.
In fact, Prince Harry was at the inauguration, sort of. Eagle-eyed viewers spotted a picture of the prince in the background when the new president was greeted by Bill and Hillary Clinton this week. The photo, taken in 2013, shows Harry in uniform laying a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, during a royal visit.
On this trip Harry went to a reception for British and US Wounded Warriors in Washington, which Joe and Jill Biden also attended. He then watched the Warrior Games and credits this as giving him his idea for the Invictus Games.
When he held the first Invictus Games a year later in London, Jill attended to support Harry. She spent so much time with the prince, Joe later joked, “Jill went to London for the last Games. She spent too much damn time with Prince Harry!” The Bidens also attended the Invictus Games in Orlando in 2016, pictured above. It’s clear how well they get on. They were also at the Canada games in 2017, when Harry and Meghan made their debut as a couple.
Harry is also big buddies with Barack and Michelle Obama – famously getting the Queen to film the Instagram video in 2016 when she put paid to Obama’s “boom”. Watch this space…
We love Camilla’s book club
With the UK still in lockdown, the launch of the Duchess of Cornwall’s The Reading Room on Instagram is perfect timing. Want to join in? Here are her first four picks:
The Mirror And The Light by Hilary Mantel - the last in the Wolf Hall trilogy and the only one that didn’t win the Booker Prize. Controversially, it didn’t even make the shortlist. Spoilsports.
Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens - the acclaimed debut novel about a reclusive young woman who finds herself at the centre of a murder investigation.
Restless by William Boyd – The Duchess previously highlighted this WW2 thriller in her first-ever reading recommendation list.
The Architect’s Apprentice by Elif Shafak - another previously included in her lockdown reading list, this is set in 16th century Istanbul, with a baby elephant.
Catherine nails the WFH wardrobe - again
While we still loaf about in our PJs, Catherine nailed the lockdown wardrobe again, in her first Zoom call of 2021. Joining Prince William, she chatted to staff from Hospice UK’s support line. She looked effortlessly chic in her Smythe blazer, £578.84. The rest of us can get a similar one from M&S for £41.30 (was £59).
Charles goes nuts for squirrels
We just loved this photo. Taken outside Birkhall, Scotland, it’s one of the few places where Britain’s native red squirrels can be found. As patron of the Red Squirrel Survival Trust, the prince posted it on Twitter on Thursday, to mark Red Squirrel Appreciation Day. Now this is something to go nuts about.
